More investors for Waka Odyssey
Southbase Construction has signed on as an investor in the Waka Odyssey spectacular that will kick off the 2018 New Zealand Festival in Wellington.
The event, which is inspired by the arrival in Aotearoa of great navigator and explorer Kupe, will involve a fleet of double-hulled waka hourua sailing across the waters of Te Whanganui a Tara as dusk falls.
Some are journeying down from Samoa and the Cook Islands to take part.
They will be welcomed by a 1000-strong haka and a mass choir singing music composed by Warren Maxwell of Trinity Roots and Little Bushmen.
It will be followed by a week-long celebration of the place of Aotearoa in the Pacific.
A Waka Odyssey is directed by theatre, film and television director Anna Marbrook with waka expert Hoturoa Barclay-Kerr and performance artists and designer Kasia Pol.
Other investors and funders for the project include New Zealand Major Events, Wellington Regional Amenities Fund, New Zealand Community Trust, Creative New Zealand, UNESCO, and Maori Tourism.
