Visitors to Takaparawhau, Bastion Point can heighten their experience by plugging in a smartphone app as they walk the whenua.

The Ngati Whatua Orakei Auckland Virtual tours app includes information on the iwi’s connection to Auckland, the treasures of the natural environment, and the cultural and historical significance of the site.

Business development manager Jamie Cook says oral traditions need to be shared to survive, so the iwi is exploring new ways to share its stories and engage with some of the 500,000 people who visit Takaparawhau every year.

The app is designed and built by Auckland-based studio M Theory, and comes in English, Maori and Mandarin versions.
