Radio New Zealand and New Zealand on Air have been asked to team up to oversee a new $6 million innovation fund aimed at generating more content for under-served audiences such as Maori and Pacific Peoples, children and regional New Zealand.

Broadcasting Minister Clare Curran yesterday revealed how the $15 million in new funding in the Budget will be carved up.

She says the multi-media content developed through the innovation fund will air on RNZ platforms and be commissioned from the independent production sector using NZ On Air’s existing funding processes.

RNZ will also receive $4.5 million to extend its digital and multi-platform services as it heads towards the RNZ+ (plus) concept the minister is promoting.

Another $4 million is ear-marked for NZ On Air to support the production of more diverse local content.

The Ministry of Culture and Heritage gets the remaining $500,000 to research how Crown-funded media agencies can use their assets more efficiently and to work out the level of funding required for an effective public media.

'Te Honongona' Urban Māori Stories
ODT Cartoon outrage misplaced
We should collectively be righteously appalled at the tone deaf ODT cartoon that made light of the terrible measles epidemic that has killed over 50 children in Samoa. It was an ugly 'joke' that shouted white privilege, but calls to boycott the ODT, sack the cartoonist and the enormous social media wave of fury seem to me to be grotesquely misplaced.
A Collins' Guide to Cultural Colour Blindness
Dr Rawiri Taonui: Utilising ‘white’ as a metaphor for ‘a person or woman of colour’ conveys connotations of white superiority.
If we legalise Cannabis, Maori must be given a leading role in industry to influence it
Martyn 'Bomber'Bradbury: If we are going to legalise cannabis, then Māori must be given a leading role in the newly established legal industry.
