Trade option good fit for many Maori
The chance to earn while you learn is drawing many young people to the trades rather than other forms of tertiary education.
That’s why tertiary support organisation Ako Aotearoa's Maori education hui is this year co-hosted by New Zealand’s 11 industry training organisations.
Spokesperson Joe Te Rito says it will cover a wide range of trades, not just building and electrical but hospitality, sports, hairdressing, and so on.
He says in recent years the push has been to increase the number of Maori at universities, but that does not suit everybody.
"One of the big things now is the debt students incur and one of the beauties of the trade route for people is they can earn as they learn and you find a lot of people going through the trade route, they get into jobs much more quickly," Mr Te Rito says.
The Ararau – Vocational Pathways to Maori Learner Success conference is at the Vodafone Events Centre in Manukau from August 1 to 3, with registration details at Ako.ac.nz
