Maori excellence in horticulture is to be recognised by the Ahuwhenua Trophy.

This year the contest was for dairy farming, with the winner being Onuku Maori Lands Trust near Rotorua.

Next year sheep and beef farms will show what they can do, and the first horticulture award will be given in 2020.

Associate Agriculture Minister Meka Whaitiri says the Maori horticulture sector is innovative and evolving, so the inaugural award be an exciting opportunity.
