Jones to stand aside on drug investment

Regional Development Minister Shane Jones says he will stand aside from any applications for help from the provincial growth fund to grow medical marijuana.

Floods that swept through Tolaga Bay last week raised questions about whether production forestry is the most appropriate land use, and whether medical marijuana is a viable alternative.

Mr Jones says the Government is considering changes, and once the law is changed investors would be entitled to grow certain strains of the plant.

"And if the landowners and the people of Tairawhiti want to get into growing it, I personally think it's the wrong step to take but I can't allow my personal well-known biases in terms of drugs to fetter their ability to bring a kaupapa forward after the legislation is passed, and really that would be up to the other ministers. I will stand aside from it," he says.

Why I can't applaud Corrections reducing the prison population but support the passion of Kelvin Davis
Martyn 'Bomber' Bradbury: The Hui did a remarkable job over the weekend of highlighting the extraordinary drop in the prison muster by 1000 since Kelvin Davis became the Minister.
The attacks by National on Immigration Minister, Iain Lees-Galloway are ridiculous !
Martyn 'Bomber' Bradbury: The Minister based his decision on Karel Sroubek using the best information from the Ministry.
Isn't it time for Pākehā to start listening and learning from Māori
Martyn 'Bomber' Bradbury :There is a fascinating debate happening right now around Māori health. The WAI 2575 Health Service and Outcomes Waitangi Tribunal hearing at Tūrangawawae marae is critically analysing the institutionalised racism embedded within Pākehā health providers and the outcome stats make for dire reading.
