Teacher recruitment lacks cultural dimension
The chair of the National Māori Authority says a plan to recruit foreign teachers to fill a 900-plus shortfall in the new school year is a sign the Education Ministry is falling down on the job.
Matthew Tukaki, who also chairs the Auckland District Māori Council, says the shortfall comes from years of mis-planning or no planning.
He says there must be serious questions about whether the foreign teachers have the cultural competence now needed in New Zealand schools.
He says Māori need to be involved in planning for the future teaching workforce.
