Te Puia on track for iwi ownership

Te Puia - The New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute in Rotorua is a step closer to iwi ownership. Parliament yesterday passed the first reading of a bill vesting the institute with Ngāti Whakaue, Tūhourangi and Ngāti Wāhiao. Māori Development Minister Nanaia Mahuta says it has taken 10 years to get to this stage. She says Te Puia has helped change the way Māori arts and crafts are viewed, which has had far-reaching implications for tourism, trade and the way Aotearoa is seen internationally. The New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute Vesting Bill will be reported back to the House in May 2019.
