Yoghurt vaccine could knock fever in throat
A kaupapa Māori nutrition research project for cardiovascular health and a vaccine that could potentially prevent rheumatic fever are among the $4.3 million in projects to be funded this year by the Heart Foundation.
Medical Director Gerry Devlin says the foundation aims to not only support research which will improve cardiovascular care globally, but also address New Zealand-specific issues.
The vaccine project could see children going to the doctor for a teaspoon of special yoghurt to protect against Strep A infections that can lead to rheumatic fever.
For the nutrition project, research fellow Erina Korohina of Toi Tangata and Dr Anna Rolleston from Tauranga’s Centre for Health will work with whānau to co-design nutrition programmes.
Ms Korohina says her experience working in community development and Māori health in Taitokerau was programmes that don’t respond to a Māori world view don’t work for Māori.
