Two Ngāti Pikiao hapū are set to expand their urupā near Lake Rotoehu with help from Transpower’s CommunityCare Fund.

Urupā trustee Davey Gardiner says Wahanui has been a culturally significant site for Ngāti Tamateatutahi and Ngāti Kāwiti for more than a century.

The $36,000 grant will help fund new concrete beams and berms to support new burial plots.

Transpower spokesperson Geoff Wishart says one of the company’s transmission lines is just over the road from the urupā, and Ngāti Pikiao have been very gracious hosts for many years.
