A big loss for Tāmaki Makaurau with the death of kaumātua Jim Rauwhero.

MP Peeni Henare says the retired Methodist minister was a familiar figure at Te Puea Marae and other marae around the region.

"A lot of people take for granted our kuia and kaumātua and if they come to hui or kaupapa they just see them as a mihi person yet if you listen to the words the likes of Uncle Jim use in his welcomes or his karakia, that's where all the mātauranga lies, that's where the guidance for what we are doing is. Uncle Jim will be sadly missed," he says.

The tangi for Jim Rauwhero is at Te Puea Marae.
