Korako keen to regain tino rangatiratanga
National MP Nuk Korako says he’s keen to resume working with his own Ngāi Tahu people once he leaves parliament next month.
He says he’s retiring after five years as a list MP because Port Hills will become eminently winnable for National when incumbent Ruth Dyson steps down at the next election, and he wants to give its candidate a chance to become known within the electorate.
He stood twice against Ms Dyson, but says he’s not able to make a commitment to serve long term if he wins.
He intends to continue working for the party, especially on its new Kahurangi Māori system of regional Māori branches.
"I am not going to any other political party, I am not going to any other organisation. I'm actually going to do things the way I want to do it, with my own tino rangatiratanga. I am not going to work for anyone but I may work with them, particularly my own iwi. I will work with them for the betterment of our people," Mr Korako says.
A highlight of his career was chairing the Māori affairs select committee.
