A museum curator says nominations for the taonga Māori section in this year’s Museum Aotearoa Awards shows the ways museums are now working to help iwi and Māori communities tell their own stories.

Auckland War Memorial Museum is in line for the tohu for its Te Paki o Matariki exhibition of treasures of the Kiingitanga.

It’s up against the New Zealand Portrait Gallery show of John Walsh paintings of Uawa Tolaga Bay, an iwi exhibition at Central Hawke’s Bay Settlers Museum and Tairāwhiti Museum’s collaboration with Te Aitanga a Māhaki.

Auckland Museum Māori projects director Linnae Pohatu says it’s a different way of thinking abut exhibitions.

"Te Ariki Tamaroa Whatumoana who was the lead and visionary for Te Paki o Matariki with the support of his father King Tuheitia said Te Paki o Matariki is not an exhibition for Māori but a Māori exhibition developed by Māori. That's a really importnat distinction to make about what we have been doing here, as have the other nominees," she says.

The award winners will be announced at a dinner at Te Papa on May 22.
