The School Trustees Association is welcoming changes to NCEA, with their emphasis on making the National Certificate of Educational Achievement more accessible and easier to understand.

President Lorraine Kerr says making NCEA free of charge is a step closer to the kiwi ideal of free state education.

Ensuring equal status for Mātauranga Māori is another important dimension of the proposed changes and fits well with the other proposals for bringing the qualifications up to speed for the 21st century.

However, there are concerns by some schools that increasing the proportion of externally assessed learning units from 30 per cent to 50 per cent could mean more exams which could make the system harder for Māori and Pasifika students.
