Wairarapa Water plan get PGF boost
The government’s Provincial Growth Fund is putting $800,000 towards Wairarapa Water’s Wakamoekau community water storage project.
The project has the potential to provide up to 18 million cubic meters of stored water in the hills above Masterton within the next six years which can be used by the region during the critical dry periods.
The application was supported by the Wairarapa Economic Development Strategy, Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa-Tāmaki Nui a Rua Settlement Trust and Rangitāne Tū Mai Rā Trust.
Wairarapa Water chair Tim Lusk says the experience in other parts of New Zealand is that once there is a commitment to building significant water storage, land use starts to change as farmers look to invest in higher-value crops.
