Shared ownership and rent to buy in Hastings papakainga
Building has started on a visionary 120-home project in Hastings.
Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga chair Mike Paku says Waingākau will be New Zealand’s first co-operative community and world’s first indigenous co-housing community.
The taiwhenua is taking a fresh look at enabling families into home ownership, with options including supported rent, rent to buy, supported ownership, full ownership and co-operative ownership.
Since 2000 a quarter of all new housing in Zurich, Switzerland, has been built by co-operatives.
Mr Paku says the Waingākau kaupapa is about working together to build a community that values guardianship of the land and of our people, brought about through kindness, relationships, unity and togetherness.
Hastings mayor Sandra Hazlehurst says there is an enormous need for housing in the district, and the council is working closely with iwi partners and central government on many similar projects.
