Queue forms for Tipene revival
A group seeking to reopen the former St Stephen's Māori boys' boarding school says almost 150 parents have enrolled their boys in the proposed school.
The registration site was launched two months ago.
Tipene Old Boys' Association chair Joe Harawira says more than 400 people have attended hui to discuss plans for the school.
He says many of those attending have been Māori mothers desperate for solutions to the poor educational outcomes for Māori students.
He says Māori boys are more likely than any other group male or female to leave school with little or no formal qualifications, but there is no targeted strategy or policy with a focus on Māori boys.
The association hopes to reopen Tipene in 2020.
