Creative New Zealand wants to see Māori arts highly valued in Aotearoa as part of a distinct identity, as well as being recognised and admired globally

That's the aim of its new Māori arts strategy, Te Ha o Ngā Toi.

Its Komiti Māori chair Dean Whiting says developing the five year plan has involved extensive engagement with ngā toi Māori artists and communities, including 28 hui around the country, an online survey, and engagement with Crown organisations and agencies.

It also involved the creation of a Mātauranga Māori framework for the arts council.

The vision is to see ngā toi Māori everywhere.

Elements include creating more opportunities for career and practice development, giving communities outside the main centres better access to ngā toi Māori, and developing support in the wider cultural sector for Māori art and culture.

The strategy can be viewed at http://www.creativenz.govt.nz/about-creative-new-zealand/corporate-documents/te-ha-o-nga-toi-maori-arts-strategy-2019-2024

Nothing highlights the denial of colonialism quite like the Parihaka apology
Martyn 'Bomber' Bradbury: We must never allow the perfect to defeat the good, but the fact that it's taken 138 years to formally apologise for the tragedy of Parihaka speaks volumes about the cultural denial of the negative effects of colonialism.
