Stormwater consent opens door for pollution tracking
A Ngāti Whātua kaumātua says Auckland Council consultation hui on water are a chance to put a Māori perspective on the issue and improve the quality of information flowing into the system.
There's a hui this evening at Whare Oranga o Parakai to allow mana whenua from the Kaipara to have their say.
Tame Te Rangi says the council has extensive databases about the region's water sources and quality, but they aren't well linked up and they often lack critical information.
"They have put together their resource consent application that talks about the discharge of stormwater right across Tāmaki. There is an opportunity to find the information that sits alongside that data that says if water is bad, upstream effects need to be considered and listed so we get a proper picture where the sources of pollution are coming from," he says.
