Spies targeted tangata whenua, not terrorism
Greens co-leader Marama Davidson says government and politicians need to wear some of the blame for the Christchurch mosque terror attack.
Speaking after a vigil for those killed, she linked the fight for Māori rights and the environment with the fight against racism in all its forms.
She says government has contributed both through its failure to deal with the structural racism of its systems and by the politicians who whip up fear and divisiveness.
That has come together in the systemic and racist bias in the surveillance systems that are supposed to keep all citizens safe.
"It's very clear we we're not looking in the right direction. We were terrorising school busses in Rūātoki. We were looking at environmental activists. We were looking at tangata whenua who have been pointing out their dissent for generations. We have been looking in the wrong direction and we ignored the white supremacist terrorists that hid in plain sight," Ms Davidson says.
