Iwi push for greater role in next Census
The Data Iwi Leaders Group says the failure of the 2018 Census to properly count Māori provides a unique opportunity to co-design better data solutions for the future.
Spokesperson Rāhui Papa says the group has been working with Stats NZ to address some of the data gaps which means the Department can’t provide official statistical counts of iwi information because of the amount of iwi affiliation data that is missing.
He says it’s clear iwi cannot afford to solely rely on one data source, like the Census.
They should have access to greater information, across the whole of government.
He says Stats NZ has promised to work more closely with Iwi Māori to co-design the next Census.
