Rotorua schools have scored highly in this year's Prime Minister's Education Excellence Awards, with Rotorua Boys' High School taking the Supreme Award for the way it has used its new boarding hostel as a way to boost Māori achievement.
Judges says the Tai Mitchell Hostel provides 24-hour learning opportunities and a strong element of whānau infrastructure and involvement.
Having teachers as house-masters creates a learning and pastoral environment for the students' holistic development.
The school also won the Excellence in Leading award.
Rotorua's Te Kōhanga Reo ki Rotokawa won the Excellence in Teaching and Learning tohu, based on its Ngā Kōrero Tuku Iho assessment approach that used kaupapa Māori principles and wānanga to track the progress of tamariki and strengthen connections with whānau.
Nearby Tiaki Early Learning Centre won the Excellence in Health and Wellbeing Education section.
The Education Focus Prize for Excellence in Māori-medium Education went to Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Hoani Waititi Marae in Auckland.Copyright © 2019, UMA Broadcasting Ltd: www.waateanews.com
