Principals give tick to history lessons
The president of the Principals Federation says principals are ready and waiting to ramp up teaching of New Zealand history in their schools.
The curriculum will be revamped to put New Zealand history, including Māori history and the New Zealand Wars, in every classroom by 2022.
Whetu Cormick says a lot of work has been done in the past few years to develop resources, including the Māori history Te Takinga of te Wā which many schools are using voluntarily.
It includes space for iwi and hapū to deliver local history through that resource.
"I suspect when this curriculum lands, not only are our young people, Māori, Pākehā or other, are going to learn about the great migration and the colonists coming, James Cook, but they are also going to be learning about their own history, their own iwi and their own hapū," Mr Cormick says.
The two year lead in gives time to train up teachers to deliver the new curriculum.
