Emergency department racism challenged
District health boards are being challenged to eliminate racism from their emergency departments and make them safe spaces for Māori.
It's one of the themes of this week's New Zealand Emergency Department Conference in Taupō.
Organising committee member John Bonning from the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine says the equity theme acknowledges Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the inequalities that exist in the health system for different ethnic groups, particularly for Māori patients.
Māori professionals including Middlemore emergency doctor Inia Thomas and former Tauranga Hospital ED nurse manager Marama Tauranga will share their experience of working on the hospital front line, while Theresa Ngamoki from Whakatāne Hospital will present on work being done there to reduce avoidable hospital admissions involving Māori.
