Action plan tackles motel housing
The Government will create another 1000 transitional housing places by the end of the year, on top of the 1300 created over the past two years.
Releasing the $300 million Aotearoa New Zealand Homelessness Action Plan this morning, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said it will reduce the reliance on leased motels for emergency accommodation.
She says it will take time to fix the homelessness crisis which was decades in the making, made worse by the previous Government for selling off state houses.
For those still required to stay in motels for more than a week, their payments will be limited to 25 percent of their income in line with other tenants in social housing.
Other aspects of the plan include $20m to work with Māori to prevent homelessness and to expand housing supply that delivered by Māori;
– $17.5m to support young people leaving Oranga Tamariki care into accommodation with wrap-around support services; and
– $16.3m to help acute mental health and addiction inpatients transition into the community with housing and other wrap-around support.
