Brunning a force for mana motuhake in theatre
Unforgettable on stage and a powerhouse behind it.
That’s how broadcaster Stacey Morrison remembers actor, director and playwright Nancy Brunning, who died on Saturday aged 48.
Ms Morrison, who’s the media spokesperson for the whanau, she first remembers seeing Brunning performing as a schoolgirl fresh out of Taupo, small physically but a huge presence on stage or screen.
She started as she was to continue, taking on a number of roles on and off stage for Wellington Maori theatre company Taki Rua.
“That was one of our best ways to have mana motuhake in writing, producing, directing and being everything on stage and the opportunities they took to really put out some great narrative that was very much needed at that time in the nineties,” Ms Morrison says.
The tangi for Nancy Brunning is at Raukawa Marae in Otaki, with the nehu on Wednesday followed by a private cremation.
