Wahine share life stories through art
The curator of an exhibition exploring the lives of 18 year old women living in Auckland says they pull no punches
18×18 is a multi-media exhibition, exploring the lives of eighteen young wahine, aged eighteen from all over Tāmaki Makaurau
The exhibition has a focus on topical issues facing young people like the youth mental health epidemic, the climate crisis and the generational disconnect
Verity Johnson says they 18 include two Wāhine Māori who share their experiences of starting a business and dealing with issues mental house, homophobia and gender issues.
"If we talk about young women in the mainstream media we are often talking stereotypes. They were saying they were sick of seeing young Maori women being described in negative ways and they were really glad they got to reshape the mainstream media narrative around what powerful and positive things they were doing and for their communities and whānau," Ms Johnson says.
18×18 begins tomorrow and will run through the weekend with locations in Silo, Studio One and Britomart Central
