Māori have told a review of the Charities Act they want the Act to incorporate te ao Māori principles and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Submitters described the charities framework as a good fit for Maori, but a third also found the definition of charitable purpose limits the activities of iwi organisations to benefit their people.

These included limits on economic development initiatives, savings schemes for iwi members, housing, the advancement of culture, and support for iwi members living overseas.

Small Maori charities also complained they do not had the resources or experience to meet their oligations under the Act, particularly when it comes to reporting,

Having to invoice for koha is felt to be out of alignment with tikanga.

Te Whakakitenga o Waikato told the review critical activities such as advocacy are not covered by the law.

The Department of Internal will provide advice on issues raised by review to the Minister for the Community and Voluntary Sector, but no legislative changes will be proposed without further consultation.
