Ombudsman calls in Maori advisors
Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier has set up a panel of Māori advisors as he prepares for an enhanced role in overseeing complaints and investigations relating to the Oranga Tamariki system and children and young people in care.
Pūhara Mana Tangata member Dame Naida Glavish says the panel will help the Ombudsman focus on matters that have an impact on Māori communities and advise him on the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
The panel, which includes Lady Tureiti Moxon, Neville Baker, Arihia Bennett from Ngāi Tahu, Ngahiwi Tomoana from Ngāti Kahungunu, and Te Puni Kōkiri staffers Juscinta Grace and Jacob McGregor, will match the office’s investigative powers with its own.
"It is a committee that is committed to ensure that when we do receive any form of complaint, that we will investigate it to the last measure to ensure that we find the truth," Dame Naida says.
