Museum interest boosts Maori study

The Kawharu Foundation in partnership with Auckland Museum is looking for Maori undergraduate or graduate students whose research can be linked to the museum's collections.

On offer is a $10,000 grant as well as the prospect of an academic mentor.

The purpose of the Sir Hugh Kawharu Scholarship is to support and encourageMāori research and leadership, particularly in the field ofcultural heritage.

As well as the research project beingin an area of relevance to the Museum's collections, the foundation is also looking for a connection to Māori social development and communityengagement.

The late Sir Hugh Kawharu, a Ngati Whatua leader and the head of Maori studies at the University of Auckland, was a member of the museum's trust board for more than 30 years.

Applications close on January 29.
