Whānau Ora Minister Peeni Henare is rejecting criticism he has no plan for the programme.

National’s Māori development spokesperson, Jo Hayes, says Mr Henare only started consulting with senior Māori figures after he secured a $136 million boost in Budget 2020.

Mr Henare says Māori have made it clear they want to be partners with the crown on how whānau ora evolves, so it’s not for him to impose a plan on them.

“I think we’ve got an opportunity here and I’ve discussed it with the whānau ora commissioning agencies and whānau ora provider networks amongst others on how we might make sure in a post-COVID world whānau ora responds to the needs of our families which we know are going to be particularly challenging as unemployment and economic issues bite and they will bite hard on our people so best to work with the whānau than to do it to them,” he says.
