Guidelines have been prepared to help marae in Ngāti Hine manage tangihanga and other hui at COVID-19 Level 2.

Te Manawaroa o Ngāti Hine chair Pita Tipene says the marae toolkit was created to provide practical support for whānau and hapū members who may be struggling with how to practice tikanga while keeping whānau safe.

He says it’s a tough time for grieving whānau, especially with restrictions on practices like hongi, harirū and embracing whānau members.

It provides a local Te Tai Tokerau and Ngāti Hine context to the Health Ministry’s national guidelines.

Marae are encouraged to draw up a plan including how to contact trace people, maintain health and safety, handle food and receive koha.
