Mitai not letting its hangi stones get cold
Rotorua’s Mitai Māori Village is offering a drive through hāngī this evening as it looks for a way to survive while waiting for tourists to return.
Owner Wetini Mitai-Ngatai says its cultural experience and hāngī business came to a screaming halt on March 23, but staff won’t sit around looking like carvings.
He says its hangi meal is particularly sought after because it is cooked the traditional way – in the ground using heat from hāngī stones.
Customers can book a meal online and are then given a time to turn up and collect it.
Mitai Maori Village is also planning a food truck business selling paleo and vegan-friendly hāngī from different locations around Rotorua.
