Fears that Labour would turn it's back on Maori representation in Manurewa proved groundless, with the party picking Arena Williams from Te Aitanga a Mahaki, Tuhoe and Ngai Tahu as its candidate for the September election.

The 30-year-old lawyer and mother of two had entered the race as a battle was shaping up between sitting MP Louisa Wall and local activist Ian Dunwoodie.

After threatening legal action over the Ms Williams’ nomination, Ms Wall withdrew her name from the selection and announced she would instead seek a place on the party list.

Ms Williams is a member of the Waitematā District Health Board and of Unitec Institute of Technology's Rūnanga.

She says she looks forward to running a positive and optimistic campaign to win the support of people in Manurewa.

“My politics is grounded in my faith and in the belief that everyone has inherent dignity, that work and service bring us fulfilment, and that we have a duty to care for creation,” she says.
