Scholarships drawing Māori into forestry careers

Forestry Minister Shane Jones says forestry scholarships are helping young Māori establish careers in an industry the Government is making a priority.

Mr Jones is in a fight with forest owners over a proposed law to register log sellers and forest advisors, as a way to encourage more local processing rather than the mass export of raw logs.

He says the reform is complemented by Ngā Karahipi Uru Rākau Forestry Scholarship scheme, which was started to encourage more diversity in the workforce.

"Recently we’ve had a number of Māori applicants and they've been largely women and they've done exceedingly well as they've moved into the Canterbury Forestry School. The allocation of more pūtea is going to be good news for our school leaders, especially those of our Māori kids from rural areas who can go to the bright lights and get a degree in an industry that our Government has certainly rejuvenated," Mr Jones says.

Eight Ngā Karahipi Uru Rākau Forestry Scholarships are available, paying $8000 a year for four years to help with tuition and living costs, and they’re open to Māori and women.
