An organisation devoted to helping the low income and homeless of south Auckland is trying to buy a home of its own.

Mangere Budgeting Services was given just 20 days to move when its Mahanga Rd headquarters was sold in May.

Chief executive Darryl Evans says the new tenant generously subleased it a smaller space as a temporary fix, and the foodbank was moved to Tidal Rd.

But with a lack of affordable leases in Mangere, it is crowdfunding for a deposit to buy its own premises.

He says the community is rallying around.

"One person said to me 'I can only give $5,' but I'm very much of the old school that's $5 we didn't have yesterday, so every dollar makes a difference," he says.

Darryl Evans says before COVID-19 the Mangere Budgeting Services foodbank did about 150 to 200 parcels a week, but at the height of the lockdown demand peaked at 895 parcels in a day – and demand continues to be high for all its services.

Is it time to dump Police 10-7?
Martyn 'Bomber' Bradbury: When challenged over TVNZ's lack of diversity in 2007, then chief executive Rick Ellis told a select committee that TVNZ had Police 10-7 which offered a Māori presence that met charter requirements.
If you are frightened by the COVID virus, wait until you hear about the latest from the climate crisis
Martyn 'Bomber' Bradbury: While the New Zealand mainstream media are focused on attacking the Government over failures at the border, there is a far larger threat to New Zealand that is rapidly approaching us with almost no fanfare.
