Wall takes aim at revenge porn
Manurewa MP Louisa Wall’s private members bill stepping up the penalties for revenge porn has been drawn from the biscuit tin, meaning it now has a chance to become law.
Ms Wall says the practice of posting to the internet intimate photographs of a former partner is a form of sexual violence.
The Bill will also cover other online postings where people don’t agree to their images being used.
"Currently in the law, you have to prove you have done that to intentionally harm someone. That burden of proof is too high a threshold. What my Bill now says is if you don't have the consent of someone, you can't post it, and the act of posting it, that is a criminal offence," Ms Wall says
There have been cases of victims of revenge porn committing suicide because of the shame they feel.
