One of the people behind a new website to support Māori with violence prevention information says the COVID-19 lockdown shows why such a resource is vital.

The Whare Māori portal is hosted on the New Zealand Family Violence Clearinghouse, which Rihi Te Nana says is well respected as a research and information platform.

She says her team at Unitec’s Māori and Indigenous Research Centre, Ngā Wai ā Te Tūī, felt it was a good place to collate various sources of information, including from social media and iwi websites, and present it in ways that can support whanau well being.

"It is important to find resources, whether it's within the whānau or whether you are a practitioner or a healer or a provider, ideas and activities that can help whānau to find ways to let off steam, small activities to do with your tamariki, find ways to maintain a hopefully safe relationship with your partner at this time," she says.
