Humans replace computers in translation app
A pay mobile app launched this week will connect people needing English-Māori translations with experienced translators.
Ōkupu was created by Te Awamutu woman Aroha Turner, working with te reo Māori advocate Paraone Gloyne.
She says it will allow people who struggle with the language, particularly when using social media, to connect with a person rather than computer-generated translations.
Pricing starts at 0.54 cents per word for 1-8 words, 0.81 cents for 9-15, 0.63 cents for texts 16 words and over with a commercial service for larger translations.
"It's sort of like an Uber model. You put in the sentence you would like translated. It generates the cost. If you are happy with the charge, it goes through to a translation queue. The certified translator will pick it up and in five minutes your translation should be back with you," Ms Turner says.
