Labour is promising a $20 million fund to support Māori boarding schools.

Only four of the historic schools remain - Hukarere College, St Joseph’s Māori Girls’ College and Te Aute College in Hawke’s Bay and Hato Pāora College in Feilding.

Ikaroa-Rāwhiti candidate Meka Whaitiri said these schools carry on a tradition that has grown many great Māori leaders.

She says rangatahi who attend these schools live and breathe tikanga, reo and develop a sense of whanaungatanga that can only be achieved inside these unique institutions.

The fund will allow the schools to invest in building upgrades.
