The Royal Australasian College of Physicians has slammed the continued presence of serious preventable illnesses as a symptom of political apathy.
The college says the Government's COVID-19 response shows what is possible with diseases like measles and rheumatic fever.
President George Laking says such diseases that have no place in a developed country like New Zealand, and blame for their spread lies squarely at the feet of the powerful.
"Rheumatic fever is a political disease and the ownership is with those who hold power. The ownership is not with those who are afflicted by it because those are people who are disadvantaged and are not in a position to decide if they are going to be afflicted with it or not," he says.
Dr Laking says ending poverty and creating an equitable health system is vital to killing off rheumatic Fever.Copyright © 2020, UMA Broadcasting Ltd: www.waateanews.com
