Iti moves on from Tuhoe Raids
The full story of what was happening in the Rūātoki Valley 13 years ago may be revealed in a movie.
Yesterday was the anniversary of the so called Tūhoe Raids, and Tame Iti, who was jailed for arms offences arising out of camps he ran for social justice advocates in Te Urewera, spent the day talking to filmmaker Te Arepa Kahi about a project.
In recent years he has also been talking to police, with invites to speak to trainees at the Police College and with groups of serving officers.
"I think it's all about attitude. We need to look at what our future looks like so how do we move away from what happened 13 years ago and where are we going to now. That's all part and parcel of the police apology Some people still not too happy about it but I think we need to find a pathway that enables us to move on and we do not end up in that kind of situation that happened 13 years ago," Mr Iti says.
