Mana in Mahi extended
The Mana in Mahi pre-employment programme has been expanded, alongside a new apprenticeship subsidy.
Employment Minister Willie Jackson says another $30 million is going into Mana in Mahi to support a wider range of people, including workers of all ages who may have to retrain due to the economic impacts of COVID-19.
The programme helps people get recognised industry qualifications that will lead to long term work.
The new Apprenticeship Boost scheme gives employers a subsidy of up to $12,000 for first-year apprentices and $6,000 for second-year apprentices.
Education Minister Chris Hipkins says without such initiatives the country risks losing apprentices and facing a massive skills shortage on the other side of the pandemic, as it did after the Global Financial Crisis.
