The flare-up in community transmission of COVID-19 has disrupted electioneering.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced the dissolution of parliament due today would be put off until at least Monday, which leaves open to the possibility of putting back the date of the election.

Deputy Prime Minister and New Zealand First leader Winston Peters says the important thing now is to deal with the outbreak as fast and efficiently as possible.

His campaign had got as far as Palmerston North, and he had intended to make stops in Levin and Kapiti Coast today before heading on to Wellington and Te Waipounamu.

“Frankly it’s all on hold now, temporary suspension, pack up and go home until we find out what’s (happening) and we’ve got to drive the bus all the way back to Northland, so it’s a long way to go, or we may leave it down here - we haven’t had a chance to make a decision yet because the campaign as I say has been suspended,” Mr Peters says.
