Peters a hypocrite
Criticism has come thick and fast to New Zealand First and leader Winston Peters controversial referenda on whether to abolish the Maori seats.
Winston Peters announced the referenda in the weekend adding that under MMP the seats are no longer necessary.
But former New Zealand First MP and now President of the Maori Party Tukoroirangi Morgan says Winston Peters is a hypocrite and the referenda is a populist play to non Maori voters.
"This is sheer hypocrisy. We're talking about some whose bid for parliament was rooted in a attempt to take the Taitokerau seat. Winston has come the full circle, now he's trampling on the aspirations of Maori for the sake of popularity amongst Pakeha and non-Maori voters," says Tukoroirangi Morgan.
National Party deputy leader Paula Bennett says there's still room for Maori seats in Parliament.
New Zealand First will also hold a second referenda on whether the number of MP's should be reduced to 100 currently there's 119 MP's, 7 Maori, 62 general seats and 50 party list.
