A Māori and Pasifika youth environmental organisation is one of the first recipients of a Jeanette Fitzsimons Climate Action Grant, announced to mark the first anniversary of her death on March 5 last year.

The legacy was established by friends and colleagues of the activist and Green Party co-founder.

Te Ara Whatu came together as the first indigenous youth delegation from Aotearoa at the 23rd Session of the UN Climate Talks in Bonn, Germany in 2017.

They have continued to raise awareness of the climate crisis amongst Māori and Pasifika communities and promote the engagement of indigenous communities in global solutions to climate change.

The award will support a series of three-day wānanga on marae around Aotearoa to share knowledge and advice with other rangatahi Māori and Pasifika and build networks to co-ordinate grassroots and national action.

The other award this year goes to Generation Zero to support its campaign to decarbonise transport in Auckland.
