Transport in Tamaki an equity issue
The chair of Auckland's Independant Māori Statutory Board says a lack of affordable public transport in many parts of the super city is having a negative effect on Māori.
The Government yesterday launched a commuter rail service between Hamilton and Auckland, but David Taipari says there are major service gaps in the city that need fixing.
The board put those concerns recently to Transport Minister Michael Wood.
"We explained to him as we have tried to do with Auckland Council, central government about bringing equity in for Māori, particularly for our people out south and west who seem to be at the other end of the balance sheet in terms of the cost of public transport, the availability and access to public transport where they need it most," Mr
David Taipari says the board also raised with the Minister social procurement and the visibility of te reo Māori on public transport.
