The Environment Ministry is putting $3 million from its Community Environment Fund into a Para Kore marae-based training programme to support whānau, hapū and iwi to reduce waste in their rohe.

Environment Secretary Vicky Robertson says the Whakapapa ki a Papatūānuku project demonstrates the potential of te ao Māori approaches and grass roots partnership to support environmental progress.

The project will run for four years with the long-term goal of empowering people to design waste out of their communities - on their own terms.

This is achieved through an empowering and inclusive approach featuring wānanga, waste audits, installation of reuse equipment and on-going mentoring.

Para Kore general manager Jacqui Forbes says the grant will enable the rōpu to enable us to support more marae and organisations across Aotearoa.

She says the programme is delivered from a Māori worldview and helps to ‘de-normalise’ the throwaway, linear, industrialised systems which are harmful to people and Papatūānuku.
