The editor of new book on Te Rauparaha says he was painted as a monster by Pākehā because he was seen as an obstacle to colonial settlement.
Ross Calman's bilingual biography is based on a manuscript written by his tūpuna and the Ngāti Toa Rangatira's son Tamihana.
He says most of what we know about Te Rauparaha came from settlers who were seeking Ngāti Toa land.
Tamihana's account paints a different portrait of the supposed warmonger.
