Maori love poem in Berlin short film final

A poem in te reo Māori has been accepted for the ZEBRA Poetry Film Festival competition in Germany - the largest international platform for short films based on poetry.

Noho Mai traces a bird’s flight and longing to return to its nest.

Poet Peta-Maria Tunui says it grew out of an online workshop she ran during the COVID-19 lockdown with kiwi filmmaker Charles Olden, who is currently in Spain, and Colombian writer Lilian Pallares.

It's a love letter to whānau around the world unable to travel home.

"We felt we wanted to express to our loved ones who were overseas a recognition of what they would be feeling at this time and an expression of love to them and to remind them home is here and they can continue to draw strength from that even though they are far away," Tunui says.

Noho Mai was one of 34 finalists from almost 2,000 entries from 100 countries.

The Zebra opening ceremony will be streamed live on November 19 at 8pm Berlin time - that's 8am here today - and the awards ceremony at 8pm November 22, with the entries available for four weeks on Vimeo by Demand.

OPINION: Kelvin Davis has another terrible day at the office
Martyn 'Bomber' Bradbury: I am honestly not sure who is advising Minister Kelvin Davis, but his surprising decision this week to attack People Against Prisons Aotearoa (PAPA) and refer their pamphlets calling on prison reform to the Police for supposedly inciting the prison riot at Waikeria prison is such a desperately wrong footed move one is left wondering what on earth he thinks he's doing.
