A project to use robotics to encourage young Māori to engage in science, technology, engineering and maths has expanded from its Bay of Plenty base.

This week 22 kura Māori from around Mataatua, Waiariki and Waikato-Tainui are taking part in the National Robotics Scrimmage, where teams design, modify and manipulate a prototype robot to complete a series of tasks.

Thomas Mitai from Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi's RoboPā technology hub says while the engineering and computational skills are important, so too is learning how to work together.

"It's more creating those relationships, fostering the ahuatanga, manaakitanga, mahi tahi, kotahitanga, whanaungatanga, all the tanga," he says.

Robotics Scrimmage runs today and tomorrow at Awanuiārangi's Whakatāne campus.
